Trans+ Inclusive Practice

Who should attend?

This training is aimed at those who are currently working with trans+ (transgender, nonbinary and gender diverse) individuals or who wish to work towards working with trans+ people.

The training is designed for those who are working in support services, social work, health (both physical and mental health settings) particularly those workers that may encounter trans+ people who are experiencing domestic abuse.

Principles

The training draws on both the lived experience of the trans+ trainers, the research and knowledge base and the accounts of the victim / survivors using the Loving Me service.

The training is interactive using a mix of presentation, discussion and group activity. The training is designed to be highly accessible, both to those with a high level of academic education but also for workers with little or no formal education. The trainers work hard to demystify the topic and create an environment where trainees can ask difficult questions in a safe environment.

Background of the trainer

The principal trainer has two decades of experience in the design and provision training and education, having worked both as an academic, lecturer and practitioner in the fields of domestic abuse and sexual violence.

He will be supported by members of the Loving Me staff team.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the training trainees will be able to;

  • Understand the definitions of trans+ and non-binary.
  • Recognise and use some of the language used to address trans+ people.
  • Develop a basic understanding of what is meant by transition both in terms of medical and social aspects.
  • Recognise the barriers to accessing transition related healthcare.
  • Develop an understanding of trans+ people’s poor experience of services.
  • Recognise why many trans+ are reluctant to use services and how workers can counter this.
  • Examine the research into trans+ people’s experience of homelessness, poor mental health and social isolation.
  • Understand some the specific types of domestic abuse experienced by trans+ people.
  • Recognise media myths around trans+ people, particularly those that view trans+ people as a risk to others and counter these myths with reference to academic research.
  • Develop a person and service action plan to move towards being a trans+ inclusive practitioner and service.

Please note that this course is exclusively available to colleagues within the Lancashire County Council area. Regrettably, if you are based outside of this area, your registration will be cancelled by the LSBU.
